Clan Legacy

Ancient Foundations

The roots of Clan Lamont stretch deep into the bedrock of Argyll and the Cowal Peninsula. Descended from the Irish princely house of O’Neill, our lineage transitioned from the shores of Ulster to the rugged Highlands, establishing a presence that would endure for nearly a millennium.

“In the year 1235, the historic Paisley Abbey Charter officially recorded a grant of lands by Laumanus, son of Malcolm and grandson of Ferchar. It is from this progenitor, Laumanus, that the name Lamont was born.”

The 1235 Charter

The charter granted at Paisley Abbey is the first definitive documentary evidence of the Clan as a landed entity. This pivotal moment transformed the kindred of Laumanus into the Clan Lamont. Throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, the Chiefs held vast territories across Cowal, governing from their seats at Toward Castle and Ascog Castle.

Trial and Resilience

The Clan’s history is one of immense strength in the face of adversity. From the turbulent period of the Civil Wars to the tragic events at Toward in 1646, the Lamonts have consistently demonstrated a spirit that “Neither Spares Nor Disposes.” Despite the loss of ancestral lands, the bloodline and the heritage remained unbroken.

The Society Today

Today, the Clan Lamont Society serves as the modern guardian of this ancient legacy. We bridge the gap between our medieval origins and our global descendants, ensuring that the history written in the 1235 Charter continues to inspire future generations of the Clan.
